Protein: The Meno Woman’s Best Friend
When it comes to navigating menopause and beyond, protein isn’t just another nutrient—it’s your best friend. It helps with weight management,
keeps muscles strong, supports bone health, and even aids in maintaining brain function. For menopausal women, protein becomes even more vital because we naturally lose muscle mass and bone density as oestrogen declines. That’s where ensuring 20-30% of your daily macros come from protein can make all the difference.
But what does that mean in real terms? How much protein should we be aiming for at each meal?
For most women, this equates to around 30 grams of protein per meal, which might sound daunting but is more doable than you think. Here’s a quick guide to visualise what 30g of protein looks like on your plate:
- Breakfast: A three-egg omelette with spinach and a sprinkle of cheese will get you there. Or, if you prefer something lighter, a bowl of Greek yogurt with a handful of almonds and a scoop of protein powder is an excellent option.
- Lunch: A grilled chicken breast (around 100g) is your go-to hero here, but if you’re veggie, a cup of cooked lentils or quinoa salad with mixed seeds will hit the mark.
- Dinner: A piece of salmon or a fillet of tofu (roughly the size of your palm) alongside some mixed greens will set you up nicely for your evening meal.

Many women I work with are surprised to learn that they’re often under-eating protein, which is why tiredness, achy joints, and difficulty managing weight can become common complaints. And it’s not just about short-term benefits. Long-term, a higher protein intake can help reduce the risk of sarcopenia (muscle loss) and osteoporosis, which are crucial considerations as we age.
