How to become a Reformer Pilates instructor (UK)
If you’ve ever finished a Pilates class feeling stronger, calmer and quietly proud of yourself, chances are you’ve wondered what it might be like to be the one at the front of the room.
Becoming a Pilates teacher isn’t just about knowing exercises, it’s about understanding bodies, building confidence in others and creating spaces where people feel supported to move well. It can be a wonderfully rewarding career, whether you’re looking for a complete change, a flexible side hustle or a natural next step from loving Pilates yourself.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through the different routes into teaching, the qualifications you’ll need, and the costs so you can decide if it’s the right path for you.
OPTION 1 — The traditional pathway (most recognised)
Step ONE Level 3 Mat Pilates qualification
This is usually the foundation and often required before reformer training.
- Builds anatomy, teaching skills, programming
- Recognised industry route
Examples of training providers
- Level 3 Pilates instructor course approx £945
- CIMSPA-endorsed with practical training either face to face or virtual learning
- There are face to face practical days at the Village Hotel in Notts
- Coursework assessments: 50%, Practical assessments 25% and Therory 25%
- Level 3 Mat Pilates
- Around £1,046 (discounted) depending on study format
- All online optional face to face days
- The fitness group also do a bundle £2032 for mat and reformer together. 4 Practical training days in a studio for the reformer.
- Level 3 Mat Pilates
- Around £1,800 depending on study format
- All online optional face to face days
- 4 Practical training days in a studio for the reformer.
- It is very difficult to get a price out of them, you have to go on a call
- Level 3 Mat Pilates
- A blended online, face to face course
- Small Groups of 6 in Rachels studio in Nottingham
- She is currently running courses every month
- £900
- Rachel offers bundles of mat & reformer
👉 This qualification is commonly a prerequisite before reformer training
Step two Level 3 Reformer Pilates qualification
After mat, you specialise on equipment and teaching skills.
HFE

- Combines online learning with 4 practical training
Choreography to Go
- Level 3 Reformer Pilates approx £900
- 1-2-1 tutor support
- Combines online learning with 1 practical training day
Typical cost for Option 1
Roughly £2,000–£3,000 total depending on provider and offers
👉 This is the route most gyms and studios recognise because it follows the regulated qualification pathway.
Could take up from 6-12 months to fully qualify
OPTION 2 — Faster studio-based route
Become an instructor (School of Reform)
Some studios run their own in-house instructor training, which is often:
- Faster
- More practical
- Is open to non-mat teachers
Example (School of Reform style approach)
- Specialist instructor courses around £1,750 depending on course
- Focus on teaching dynamic classes and specific apparatus
These programmes are often:
✔️ Very hands-on
✔️ Great for teaching in boutique studios
⚠️ Not equivalent to a regulated Level 3 pathway, but you can get insurance and be ready to teach in around 3-4 months.

👉 Faster and immersive
👉 Great if you want to teach in a specific studio style
