The Importance of Eating Fibre Rich Foods

Fibre is one of the most essential nutrients we need daily, especially as we age, but it’s often overlooked! Fibre supports digestion, stabilises blood sugar, helps with weight management, and plays a key role in heart health by reducing cholesterol. Plus, it keeps us feeling fuller for longer, which can help with appetite control.

There are two main types of fibre: soluble (which dissolves in water) and insoluble (which adds bulk and aids digestion). Both are important, and it’s ideal to get a mix of both each day.

Where to start? Fibre-rich foods are found in plants like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Some great choices are oats, apples, berries, carrots, broccoli, chia seeds, lentils, and whole grains like brown rice or quinoa.

How to eat more fibre? Try starting your day with a fibre-packed breakfast, like oatmeal topped with berries and chia seeds or a smoothie with spinach, banana, and a spoonful of ground flaxseed. Lunch could be a whole grain wrap filled with veggies, hummus, and lean protein, or a hearty vegetable soup with beans or lentils. For dinner, aim to fill half your plate with vegetables, add a serving of whole grains, and a source of protein.

Snacking? A handful of nuts, a sliced apple with nut butter, or some raw veggies and hummus are great fibre-boosters.

Increasing your fibre intake doesn’t need to be hard; a few small tweaks make a big difference. Aim for about 25–30 grams a day, and remember that fibre helps keep us feeling great from the inside out!
