Three Pelvic Floor Myths That Need Busting – Now!

I’m constantly amazed (and honestly, a bit frustrated!) by how many women I speak to who are quietly putting up with pelvic floor issues. Friends, class members, fit women, strong women… all whispering about leaks, urgency, or that dreaded “key in the door” dash.

Why are we putting up with it? Why should we?

Spoiler alert: We shouldn’t. And the good news? You can do something about it. So let’s bust a few big myths:

MYTH 1: Pelvic floor issues are normal after childbirth
FACT: It’s common – but not normal.
Just because lots of women experience it, doesn’t mean it’s something we have to accept. It’s like saying knee injuries are normal in fitness instructors—common, yes. Inevitable? No! Let’s stop normalising something that can absolutely be improved.

MYTH 2: Only women have pelvic floor dysfunction
FACT: Men and kids have pelvic floors too!
The pelvic floor is essential for everyone. Dysfunction can show up as leaks, prolapse, pain, constipation, or even bedwetting—and it’s not just a “women’s issue.”

MYTH 3: Pelvic floor issues always mean weakness
FACT: Some pelvic floors are too tight!
We hear so much about strengthening, but a tight, overactive pelvic floor can also cause problems—like urgency, constipation, and painful sex. A healthy pelvic floor is one that can contract and relax.
